Stage cabling isn’t just an aesthetic issue – it’s the foundation of show reliability. Whether we’re talking about a club, festival, or fixed installation, cable management culture separates the professional from the amateur.

In this tutorial, we’ll walk through the most important rules, tools, and practices to ensure your cables won’t cause headaches – not for you, your colleagues, or the audience.

Planning and Preparation – Before You Unpack

The first and most important step: plan your cable routing before laying down the first cable. Check the stage layout, mentally mark where the power lines will run, where signal, DMX, and speaker cables will go. Never run different cable types along the same path – crossing power and signal lines causes hum that you’ll spend hours tracking down at the mixer.

Make yourself a simple diagram – it doesn’t need to be a sophisticated AutoCAD drawing, a sketch on paper works fine. Mark:

  • Stage box position
  • Power connection points (which breaker feeds what)
  • FOH (front-of-house) mixer location
  • Monitor mixer position
  • Lighting truss or gate cabling

If possible, measure distances – this tells you which cable lengths to pack. Don’t bring what’s handy, bring what’s needed. An unnecessary 20-meter coil just takes up space and creates a trip hazard.

Separating Signal and Power Cables

Don’t Coil, Lay Flat!

Don’t wind cables in tight loops on stage. Long-term, it damages the internal structure, plus coiled cable creates an inductive loop that can cause interference. Instead, lay them out nicely in loose curves. If the cable is too long, pack the excess back in the bag or loop it neatly.

Covering and Securing

Where there are walkways – audience, crew, artists – cable ramps or heavy-duty gaffer tape are mandatory. With gaffer tape, secure the cable at a 45-degree angle on both sides, don’t just throw a strip across it. If you’re mobile, always bring rubber cable ramps – they’re safe, quick to deploy, and reusable.

Tools You Shouldn’t Leave Home Without

You don’t need to haul a ton of gear, but a few tools are essential:

  • Gaffer tape (colored too) – for marking and securing. Black, white, yellow, red: they help with quick identification (e.g., red = power cable).
  • Velcro cable ties – worth their weight in gold. Quick to wrap, they don’t break and don’t cut into the cable.
  • Cable ramps – rubber or plastic, various sizes. Worth getting 2-, 3-, and 4-channel versions.
  • Multimeter – for testing cables, finding contact faults. A simple continuity tester works too.
  • Stage box or splitter – for larger stages, a 20-30 channel multicore cable replaces individual mic cables.
  • Cable labels or tags – label both ends to identify what’s what. You’ll thank yourself during sound check.

If you’re working in the industry long-term, it’s worth investing in a cable reel – compared to hand coiling, it’s faster, more consistent, and fewer tangles.

Stage Setup – Practical Workflow

How do you unpack efficiently? Here’s a proven workflow:

  1. Mark out main routes based on your map – lay the backbone first (multicore, main power cable).
  2. Connect the stage box to FOH, run DMX line toward the lighting truss.
  3. Mic up, then route to monitor mixer – always follow signal path logic, not randomly.
  4. Power cables last – this way you see where things need to go and don’t unnecessarily cross signal lines.
  5. Secure and cover – gaffer tape, cable ramps, labeling.
  6. Final check – walk through everything, look for loose, dangling, or trip hazard sections.

After sound check, you still have time to fine-tune the routing – if something’s too tight or too loose, adjust it. 30 minutes before the show, every cable should be in place and secured.

Strike – Don’t Leave It for the Next Crew

Professionalism also shows in how you strike. Don’t rush. Don’t rip up cables randomly. Work in reverse order: what went down last comes up first. When coiling, use the over-under technique – that’s when you twist every other loop in the opposite direction, so the cable doesn’t get twisted long-term.

Coil each cable separately, secure with velcro, and return it to its own bag. And if it’s not your gear, return it exactly as you received it – with labels, neat and tidy.

Final Tips – What Else to Keep in Mind

  • Maintain your cables – check connectors, replace cracked jackets. A jack dying mid-show is a nightmare.
  • Use a color code – for your own gear, a consistent system helps a lot (e.g., red marking = power cable, yellow = DMX).
