The good news is that you don’t have to learn everything at once, and you don’t have to spend millions to get started. I can tell you from experience: the best way to learn is to throw yourself into a few smaller gigs, but you need a basic level of knowledge so you don’t burn yourself at your first concert. So let’s go step by step through what you should start with.

Know the three pillars: sound, light, stage

Event technology is divided into three main areas: audio technology, lighting technology, and stage technology. As a beginner, you don’t have to be a pro in all three, but it’s worth knowing what each one does and how they work together at an event.

Audio technology: this includes everything related to sound reinforcement. Microphones, mixing consoles, amplifiers, speakers, monitors. If a band is performing or you need to provide audio support for a conference, this is your area. To start, you should learn how to connect a simple PA system (Public Address), how to set gain, and what feedback problems are that can destroy your ears and the audience’s.

Lighting technology: moving heads, LED PARs, moving lights, DMX control – this is what really makes an event spectacular. Well-configured lighting can create atmosphere, highlight performers, or completely transform a space. As a beginner, learn DMX addressing, get to know the different types of fixtures, and try a simple lighting software (for example, QLC+ is free and perfect for practice).

Stage technology: this is the physical backdrop: support structures (truss), lifts, curtains, projection surfaces. If you’re preparing for larger events, this is a critical area – an improperly secured truss can be life-threatening. Initially, you may only encounter smaller stands (e.g., T-bar or simple floor stands), but even here, safety and load capacity knowledge are important.

Basic tools to start with

You don’t have to buy professional equipment right away, but if you’re serious, there are a few tools that are essential – whether you rent or buy them.

  • Multimeter: learn to use it! You can check cables, voltages, grounding with it. You’ll save tons of time and frustration if a quick measurement reveals that the XLR cable is dead.
  • Cables (XLR, jack, Speakon): get or use quality cables. A bad cable can ruin a production. Know the different connectors and what they’re used for.
  • DMX tester / DMX adapter: if you’re working with lighting, a simple DMX tester shows whether the signal is going down the line. Later, it’s worth getting a USB-DMX interface (e.g., Enttec compatible) so you can control fixtures from a laptop.
  • Hand tools: screwdriver set, hex key set, combination pliers, cable ties (zip-ties), electrical tape, gaffer tape – no event happens without these.
  • Headlamp: seriously, it’s a lifesaver. Indispensable on a dark stage, working with truss, or while cabling.

Learn the basics of signal flow and control

In event technology, it’s critical to understand how the signal travels from source to output device – whether it’s sound or light.

For audio: microphone → mixing console (mixer) → processor/equalizer → amplifier → speaker. Most errors in the chain are somewhere in the cabling or gain settings. Learn to carry a clean, undistorted signal through the entire chain. To start, a smaller analog mixer (e.g., 8-12 channel Behringer or Soundcraft) is perfect for practice.

For lighting: controller (DMX controller or software) → DMX interface → DMX cable (5-pin XLR or 3-pin, depending) → fixture (addressed). Every fixture has a start address (DMX address) and occupies a certain number of channels. A simple RGB PAR, for example, uses 3 channels: red, green, blue. A moving head can use 20-30. Learn to address and build a chain (daisy chain).

The point: if you understand signal flow, it’s much easier to troubleshoot when something doesn’t work.

Safety basics – take this seriously

Event technology is spectacular, but it can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. A few basic rules to immediately engrave in your brain:

  • Always check load capacity: truss, stand, hook – everything has a maximum load. Never exceed it, not even „just a little bit.”
  • Grounding: with metal-framed equipment (e.g., speakers, light stands), grounding is lifesaving. Don’t ignore it.
  • Cable management: use cable ramps, gaffer tape to reduce trip hazards. Both the audience and technicians will thank you.
  • Working at height: if you’re climbing on truss, use a safety line, helmet, and never work alone.
  • Fire safety: don’t cover ventilation openings on amplifiers, projectors. Be aware of the venue’s fire safety regulations.

As a beginner, it’s easy to underestimate the risks, but an accident can destroy a career in moments – or worse, a human life.

Learn by doing – start small

You can learn from theory, but event technology is a hands-on profession. Find local cultural centers, church events, school functions – they often welcome helpers who can learn in exchange for free or symbolic compensation.

Observe experienced technicians, ask questions, don’t be afraid to look foolish. Everyone started somewhere. If you have the chance, go to event technology companies as an intern or equipment handler – that way you’ll see the everyday reality of the profession too.

It’s worth following online courses, YouTube channels (for example, sound engineering or DMX tutorials), but the best experience will always be the live situation when something breaks and you have to solve it in 5 minutes.

Final tips: be patient and curious

Event technology isn’t a quick-return field if you start as a hobby, and it’s not easy either – but if you love what you do, it can be infinitely rewarding. A few final pieces of advice I always tell myself:

  • Build your own toolkit gradually – don’t try to get everything at once.
  • Document everything: photos of cabling, notes on settings. You’ll thank yourself later.
  • Join communities: forums, Facebook groups, professional meetups. Experienced folks are happy to help if they see you’re genuinely interested.
  • Keep learning: new fixtures, new protocols (e.g., sACN, Art-Net), new consoles – technology changes fast.

And most importantly: enjoy it! Once you’re standing at the mixing console or lighting software and you see the audience having fun at a good show, that’s the kind of euphoria that makes this profession worth doing.
