Processor or Splitter? FBT DLM-260 vs. Involight DMXS4
Every device in a rack cabinet has its role. But what happens when two units from different technological worlds end up next to each other on the shelf? The FBT DLM-260 and the Involight DMXS4 appear to be similarly sized black boxes – yet one deals with sound, the other with light. What exactly are these? Processor vs. splitter
The FBT DLM-260 is a 2-input, 6-output system processor designed specifically for FBT speakers. Its DSP core can store 32 presets, with an LCD display, RMS and PEAK level meters, and USB PC communication. Its purpose: complete control of your sound system – crossover, delay, EQ, limiter individually on every output.
The Involight DMXS4, on the other hand, is a four-output DMX splitter with galvanically isolated outputs. One DMX input, four independent, electrically isolated outputs, plus a LINK out to the next device. Metal housing, powercon power supply, 0.89 kg. It has a single task: stabilize and distribute the DMX signal, eliminate ground loop interference, and protect moving lights and LED pars from signal loss.

The DMXS4 is 217 × 124 × 48 mm, weighing just 0.89 kg. One input XLR male, one LINK XLR female, four galvanically isolated XLR female outputs. The powercon connector ensures it won’t accidentally get unplugged during cable rearrangement. The metal casing protects the unit, and the compact form is easily placed behind the stage, on a rack shelf, or in a flight case.
Application area: sound versus light
The DLM-260 is indispensable where a sound system needs fine-tuning. Active three-way PA system, installation (theater, church, conference room), touring configuration – everywhere you need to coordinate different speaker characteristics. The 32 presets allow you to load different settings for each venue: concert, stage speech, DJ set – all at the push of a button.
The DMXS4 is the backbone of lighting technology. At larger events, where dozens of moving lights, LED pars, or effect machines run on one DMX line, the splitter is essential. The isolated outputs prevent ground loops created on one branch from spreading to another, so there’s no random flickering, no signal loss at the end of the line. The LINK output allows you to chain multiple splitters without wasting more DMX outputs on the console.
When to choose which?
If you’re building or operating a sound system and need fine-tuning, limiting, crossover filtering, the DLM-260 is your device. However, if you’re setting up a DMX network, need to supply multiple effect machines, moving lights, LED strips with a stable signal, and want to eliminate ground loop problems, the DMXS4 is what you need.
Both devices were born for a narrow, well-defined task, and excel at that task. They don’t compete with each other – rather, they’re two different links in the same production infrastructure. The processor shapes sound, the splitter stabilizes light. Together, they create a flawlessly functioning system.
Conclusion: not either-or, but both-and
The FBT DLM-260 and the Involight DMXS4 are not rivals. One serves sound, the other serves light. Both in professional quality, compact form, reliable construction. If you’re building a complete production system, sooner or later you’ll need both – because on stage, sound and light work together, and both need their own intelligence in the rack cabinet.
